How to Use the Basic Calculator

Use this simple calculator for everyday arithmetic. You can add, subtract, multiply, or divide numbers without opening a separate app or writing the calculation down first.

1

Enter the first number

Select the number buttons to build the value you want to use. The current number appears in the display at the top of the calculator.

2

Choose an operation

Select the button for addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. Then enter the next number in your calculation.

3

Show the answer

Select the equals button to complete the calculation. Your answer will replace the previous value in the display.

4

Start over when needed

Use C to clear the current calculation. The plus or minus button changes a positive value to a negative value, and the percent button converts a number to its decimal percentage.

Four everyday operations

Add totals, find differences, multiply quantities, or divide a value into equal parts. Decimal numbers are supported too.

Quick results

The calculator keeps the layout clear and compact, so you can work through a short calculation at a glance.

Basic Calculator Examples

The buttons can be used for simple calculations such as these:

Using Percentages

The percent button changes the displayed number into a decimal value. For example, entering 25 and selecting percent gives 0.25. You can then use that value in another operation, such as multiplying 80 by 0.25 to find 25 percent of 80.

For more advanced expressions involving powers, roots, trigonometry, and logarithms, use the Scientific Calculator. For a list of numbers that needs a mean, median, or mode, try the Average Calculator.

Helpful Calculator Tips

Check division

Before dividing, make sure the second number is not zero. A zero divisor does not produce a valid result.

Use decimal points

Select the decimal button once for a number such as 7.5. Selecting it again will not add another decimal point.

Change the sign

Use the plus or minus button when you need to switch the current value from positive to negative or back again.
